In the first novel in Winston Graham’s hit series, a weary Ross Poldark returns to England from war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming with his beloved Elizabeth. But instead he discovers his father has died, his home is overrun by livestock and drunken servants, and Elizabeth—believing Ross to be dead—is now engaged to his cousin. Ross has no choice but to start his life anew.
Thus begins the Poldark series, a heartwarming, gripping saga set in the windswept landscape of Cornwall. With an unforgettable cast of characters that spans loves, lives, and generations, this extraordinary masterwork from Winston Graham is a story you will never forget.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Published in 1945, the first book in the Poldark series captivated us with its raw emotional drama. World-weary hero Ross returns home to England from the American Revolutionary War scarred and limping—and woefully unprepared for the disappointments he encounters, including his ruined estate. Author Winston Graham holds up a cinematic lens to his characters’ experiences, from the charged excitement of the annual pilchard fishing season to the tortured awkwardness of a family dinner. We could practically feel the Cornish sea breeze in our hair and laughed out loud at Aunt Agatha’s tactless remarks. Adapted into a successful British TV series, this masterful saga gives Gone with the Wind a run for its money.
Customer Reviews
Just read for the third time!
This is the start of the Poldark series, which is now twelve books.
It's probably one of my all time favorite series.
The only thing about the ebook that drove me mad is that the book must have been re-scanned by OCR and the name of Captain Blamey became Captain Blarney.
It's easy to see why that would happen but it still sloppy.
