Elmore Leonard’s 1992 thriller is a darkly funny crime caper, but it’s also a book about midlife crises. From impulsive gunrunner Ordell Robbie to seen-it-all bail bondsman Max Cherry, every one of Leonard’s characters yearns to make a big change before it’s too late. This is especially true of disillusioned flight attendant Jackie Burke, one of Leonard’s most likable antiheroes—her moral dilemma over cooperating with a cocky ATF agent to take down Ordell’s entire operation is at the book’s emotionally complex heart. Struggled and slogged through about 50% and gave up. NYT best seller, my butt.
