Shattered is full of drama, love, difficult choices, betrayal, hard family dynamics and more. In Catherine’s second book not only do we get to reconnect with Danny, Peter, Hayley and Kara, but we are introduced to new characters as well. These new characters turn out to be just as important.
In fact we are shown that character development not only has to do with the current story but with the character’s background, their ethnicity, environment and their choices. In book one we discover that Peter is keeping a lot of secrets, and in this book we learn how much it hurts him to keep lying. Why is he still hiding? Will he ever tell Danny and Hayley? Is there more he’s lying about? Also, Peter reaches inside himself and remembers how much he loves to cook and decides to follow his dream and take a chance.
He is not the only one looking for second chances, Danny continues to have a hard time in school. He remembers that whole night and still hates himself for not being able to fight back. There's a caseworker and CPS. It is a lot for him to handle. He does however make a new friend, but will his temper get in the way? He’s doing well on the lacrosse team, but his teammates are just that, and not actual friends. In his effort to continue to do well in lacrosse, he continues to hit the gym along with Matt. Danny is still struggling with his identity and wants to find out where he came from. In this book we will continue to watch him grow, struggle with PTSD and learn some pretty hard lessons.
And then there’s Hayley and her little girl. Hayley learns the struggles of not only being a single mom, but having no home and no family to help out. She is all alone learning how to be a mother, get a new job and more. She is still a part of the system and she's afraid that she might be stuck there. She sees a caseworker who helps her get a job and housing placement. She is keeping her baby a secret from yes, you guessed it, Peter. Will she ever tell him? Or will Everleigh meet her father?
Kara is here too, along with some new characters like Allen, Seonaid, Lachlann and Taog. We learn about Kara’s new job and much more. Does she still have feelings for Peter ? Who are these new characters and how do they fit in? Well I guess you're going to have to pick up the book and find out.
