Sands's 23rd Argeneau paranormal romance (after About a Vampire) features a somewhat nontraditional heroine who meets her hero in an unusual way. With all of the spark of a low-speed chase in a traffic jam, 62-year-old widow Mary meets the younger-looking Dante when he comes bounding along through the woods like a deer in flight and runs into her RV on a lonely back road. Mary was taking one last trip to say goodbye to her husband's memory before returning to her beloved Canada. Dante's arrival does quite a bit to upend those plans. Unfortunately, Dante is a hunted man with a desperate need to find his twin brother, which means Mary's life isn't the only one changed by that chance meeting. The opening sets an unfortunately implausible tone for the remainder of the story, which focuses more on the interplay between Dante and Mary than any deeper plot. Readers who are excited to read paranormal romance with a senior citizen heroine will be disappointed when Mary is turned into a vampire and ends up looking like Barbie, and Sands never really makes her sound as mature as her age would imply. At its best, this installment has the feel of a transition book, paving the way for future stories wherein the deeper mystery alluded to will finally be addressed. Mostly, readers will suspect that Sands had a contract to fulfill.

My, my, my!
This was so exciting! Loved the book. This is my first book by this author. All the characters were so well developed. Including Dante and Mary. I will say, when Mary indicated she was a doctor of psychology, some of her behavior/ comments surprised me. This was definitely a different spin on vampires, but I loved it. I've already pre-ordered Immortal Nights. Looking forward to Venezuela! I can't wait!
Cheap Shots
I can’t stand the fact that Lynsay Sands is taking all these cheap shots to justify a turn. When an author is too afraid to confront actual emotional problems, I find it concerning.
Mary is a turned 62 year old widow, with two children (she adopted) and some grandchildren. After her sudden turn, because of course she was harmed and had to be turned to save her life, she was eventually confronted with the fact that she wouldn’t be able to see her children or grandchildren again.
I’m glad she initially thought that she could turn her whole family (well her son was never mentioned, so screw him right?) so they could be together forever. But that idea was obviously shot down.
Didn’t appreciate how she immediately jumped to the idea of trying to get pregnant immediately. What an emotional shallow pool of a person.
The cheap shot comes in when Mary secretly visits her daughter at work. And her daughter didn’t seem distraught over her mother’s recent passing. She was even “grateful” her mother was dead. It’s a cheap shot to take the easy route. Her ADOPTED daughter never care for her. That’s okay. They’re not really blood. Forget family bonds. Forget emotional bonds.
I rather Sands try the difficult route and actually confront the grief of leaving a family behind. She probably thought adopted children are less legitimate than real biological children. But she’s wrong. And I hate cheap shots. So readers can be satisfied that Mary was turned and would never see her family again. Because you see? Mary’s adopted children didn’t really care for her. CHEAP SHOT.
Runaway Vampire
Great story. Nice twist and turns. Great plot. Throughly enjoy this book finished in one day. Can not wait for next book in this series. The immortal stories just get better and better. Love this author. Great characters. Love,humor, loss, conflict, drama, action. It has it all plus recurring characters,
