Beware: this series will consume you

I’m not much of a reader of comics, or anything for that matter. But I wanted to use some of the features on my new iPad, so I downloaded some free graphics novels to test the iBooks engine. One of them was this one, and it was the only one I read, because I immediately bought the second chapter and then the first book. It’s the perfect combination of memorable characters, interesting dialog, and clear, engaging storytelling that doesn’t overcomplicate things but still respects your intelligence. The Star Wars influences are unmistakable, but for me, it reminds me more of watching Doctor Who as a kid, or similar fantastical, slightly whimsical tv shows. An episodic adventure, with characters you want to root for, even some of the antagonists, and reliably new surprises around every bend in the story. If you read more than two or three issues, I highly recommend buying the Books or the Compendium in physical form, either online or in a local comic book store. You won’t want to pay 2.99 for every issue, and though there’s only nine volumes, they’re surprisingly short if you’re engrossed in the plot. If all this sounds delightful, you’ll probably love SAGA. But make sure you can afford both the time and money required to catch up.
