A great Sailing read!
Nothing stodgy or pompous in Slocum’s writing style. His casual, conversational expression keeps you invested in him and what he encountered.
To a history buff this could never be boring. He bridged the worlds of folks at every level of society, from Newport Elite to murderous indigenous peoples to pirates, government leaders and just plain folk.
World events contemporaneous to his three years at sea were fascinating to me. That he was on the last leg of his journey through the heart of the Caribbean right at the peak of the Spanish American War, encountering the Oregon at sea, was amazing. Small world really.
Solitude
As always, nothing teaches one more about life and God as sailing.
Great Salty Old Book
What a great read for the sailors in all of us. Takes us back to a time which defined true adventurers and make us realize how dependent we are on modern life.
