A witchy inheritance kicks off Lin's quirky but disjointed debut. Samantha Spük has no interest in her family's witchy ways. Instead, she's about to realize her dream of becoming an accountant. Then her grandma Rose dies and a stipulation of her magically binding will forces Samantha to reside in Salem, Mass. A chance encounter in a local graveyard soon prompts Samantha to start a wedding planning business catering to the supernatural community as a way to occupy her time and pay her bills. With clients including vampires, druids, and fairies, Spüktacular Weddings, LLC is a roaring success, leaving Samantha to question what she truly wants from life. It's a cozy but sputtering tale that walks the line between fantasy and romance but doesn't quite satisfy either side. The paranormal elements are frustratingly limited, often dispatched as quickly as they're introduced, while Samantha's love interest, graveyard forager Hanry, is underdeveloped and, by the end, their relationship falters. Lin mines the absurdity of the paranormal community for laughs, but the broad strokes also serve to flatten the characters. Readers will hope for more focus in future installments.
