Resume : Apres 1763, les Acadiens ont ete lents a commemorer les evenements de la deportation. La premiere commemoration officielle date de 1855 et le premier archeveque d'Halifax, William Walsh, en fut l'instigateur. Si l'Eglise fut a l'origine des commemorations subsequentes, et meme de nos jours, c'est qu'elle valorisait surtout l'axiome la foi gardienne de la langue . Ces manifestations ont toujours eu un double caractere, religieux et national. Cette tradition, bien ancree, connu son apogee lors des manifestations tenues en 1955 pour marquer le bicentenaire de la deportation. Summary : After 1763, Acadians who returned to Acadie but not on their former lands, were slow to commemorate the events of the deportations. William Walsh, the first Archbishop of Halifax was also the first to commemorate the 1755 and 1758 events, in a pastoral letter written in French. Ever since, the Church with the double gauge of religion and nationalism entwined commemorates Acadian events. This firmly entrenched tradition reached its peak in 1955 when the bicentennial of the deportations was observed with pageantry, notably at Grand-Pre.
