From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews comes a novella featuring Roman, our favorite Volhv wizard in the always intriguing, colorful, volatile Kate Daniels world.
It’s not easy serving Chernobog, the God of Destruction, Darkness and Death…especially during the holidays; and especially when you’re out of eggnog and one of your pesky, freeloading mythic creatures has eaten your last cookie.
Roman would like nothing more than to be left alone, but when a wounded boy stumbles into his yard and begs for sanctuary, Roman takes him in. Now elite mercenaries are camped out on his property, combat mages are dousing the house with fire, and strange priests are unleashing arcane magic. They thought Roman was easy pickings, just a hermit in the woods, but they chose the wrong dark priest to annoy. For while Roman might be patient, he is the Black Volhv, filled with the love of his terrible god. For his adversaries, it's a fight to the death, but for him, it's just another day in the neighborhood.
Includes a bonus short story and more!

Keep writing in this world!
First, Roman is such a great character that you want to have him protect you, you protect him, and sit back and watch his train wreck all at the same time.
Second, the inclusion of Slavic mythology is like crack to my nerdy, need to learn, and keep delving into new worlds. Yay.
A great getaway. Travel to Roman’s world, rich with Slavic mythology.
Roman is having a bad day. Something drank his eggnog and ate his cookies. His day job is priest to Chernobog but it’s supposed to be his day off.
I loved the dedication Roman gives to his dark god. I appreciated another view of the Kate Daniels world. I started reading Ilona Andrews books about a month ago after one showed up on Libby. Now I have a whole set. The characters are lovable, the settings unique, and then throw in a plot full of suspense and some romantic heat.
Disappointed for Roman
Although I have always previously enjoyed reading about Roman, this short story fell flat. Felt like tons of ancient god history shoved together with a small rushed plot. Needed to read it with while looking for the provided summaries and definitions to figure this one out. Roman’s character is unique and fascinating yet what torture to get through this looking for a spark of fun, or a glimpse of Kate’s world. No small visits from other beloved characters to liven things up. I was so looking forward for this book too.
