“For some reason, when we are traveling, we ended up arriving in the dead of night, like thieves. On some of those occasions, this had happened in Arabic countries. That has given me an opportunity to experience different things, that only take place at night. One example of that is the costume to do a small fire by the side of the road. In Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, I was fascinated to see small groups of people with a small carpet or a carpet made out of jute like material sitting around a fire. From the airport to the hotel I kept looking at a number of people, some next to their cars, others sitting far from their cars, and having pillows and ouds to play music. In all the different places where I saw a fire, I was able to see the dallahs, the traditional Arabic coffee pot that has been used for centuries, ready to give the wonderful flavors of the Middle East. It gives me the feeling that these small fires are what is left of their Bedouin lives from the past.”
