The year is 1942. The setting a United States Army disciplinary barracks in the fierce and barren landscape of the Mojave Desert. Here, troublemakers, cowards and deserters from combat units are sent for retraining and eventual reassignment.
 
During the punishing weeks in vicious sun and heat and bone-chilling nights the staff relentlessly drive the prisoners to the breaking point in an effort to "reshape" theminto a true image of a combat soldier.
