출판사 설명

With alien races both overtly and covertly hostile pressing into human space on all sides. war finally comes to the Space Force that defends our frontiers. But when a panicked flag officer orders a riskly long-range jump that goes horribly wrong, a fleet finds itself a LONG way from home with not enough food for everyone to make it back. Hard decisions have to be made with both challenges and opportunities along the way. Can the fleet make it back in time to help win the war or will they get home only to find human worlds overrun and conquered?

Fun read! I really enjoyed this story. Came in with some new ideas. Good character development without too much background that some authors tend to over due.

Interesting Premise, Weak Math

I like the initial gravity well constraint on hyperspace travel. It impacts strategy and tactics in interesting ways. The storyline, main characters, and alien races introduced in this novel are pretty solid, too. I can get past the typos and grammar errors, and even the lack of planetary defenses and stealth mines and such. But the weak hyperspace math was killing me. No military is going to risk a ship on 3% to 4% odds of becoming lost in hyperspace on every jump. And the crew would have to be suicidal idiots to sign up, especially when completing a trip might take many short jumps. Even when each jump has a 97% chance of success, a trip requiring 10 jumps means that the overall chance of safely reaching your destination is only about 74%. If you are making a round trip then, when you depart, you will only about a 52% of making it back - essentially a coin flip. And that is just one round trip… The odds of losing a ship and crew rapidly approaches certainty. Always consult with scientists, engineers, and mathematicians when crafting a sci-fi story.

Slow and boring

Unimaginative, plodding and boring. One of the few books in my life that I quit reading before the end.
