Publisher Description
The long-awaited, full-force autobiography of American punk music hero, Bob Mould.
Bob Mould stormed into America's punk rock scene in 1979, when clubs across the country were filling with kids dressed in black leather and torn denim, packing in to see bands like the Ramones, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys. Hardcore punk was a riot of jackhammer rhythms, blistering tempos, and bottomless aggression. And at its center, a new band out of Minnesota called Hvºsker Dvº was bashing out songs and touring the country on no money, driven by the inspiration of guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould. Their music roused a generation.
From the start, Mould wanted to make Hüsker Dü the greatest band in the world - faster and louder than the hardcore standard, but with melody and emotional depth. In See a Little Light, Mould finally tells the story of how the anger and passion of the early hardcore scene blended with his own formidable musicianship and irrepressible drive to produce some of the most important and influential music of the late 20th century.
For the first time, Mould tells his dramatic story, opening up to describe life inside that furnace and beyond. Revealing the struggles with his own homosexuality, the complexities of his intimate relationships, as well as his own drug and alcohol addiction, Mould takes us on a whirlwind ride through achieving sobriety, his acclaimed solo career, creating the hit band Sugar, a surprising detour into the world of pro wrestling, and most of all, finally finding his place in the world.
A classic story of individualism and persistence, Mould's autobiography is an open account of the rich history of one of the most revered figures of punk, whose driving force altered the shape of American music.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Mould's memoir is in many ways a long, slow self-immolation. Growing up in an abusive household in the small town of Malone, NY, Mould discovered two things that quickly set him apart: he was gay and he was captivated by punk rock. Pouring himself into a punk subculture in the Twin Cities, Mould tore through the eighties with one of the seminal punk rock acts of the era, H sker D , all the while keeping his sexual identity a relative secret. Mould succeeds in bringing this time to brilliant, blinding life with frenetic and vivid snapshots of the road and the eventual dissolution of the band. But what keeps things compelling is Mould's ability to sincerely reveal himself to the reader as each relationship business or personal propels him into the next chapter of his eventful life. Whether it is his unexpected and hilarious left turn to scriptwriting for professional wrestling, his busy career as one half of the DJ team Blowoff, or his hesitant and ultimately affirming embrace of mainstream gay culture, Mould never fails to captivate and inspire. I Saw the Light
Being a huge fan of Bob Mould I really appreciated the stories behind the man and his music. This window into his very private life adds context to his lyrics and greater understanding of the nature of his distinct sound as a musician.
While reading this chronological recap of his career, I found myself going back listening to the various albums in a synchronous manner to the book. I got a whole new appreciation for his music. Bob, thank you for "The Gift" of your story!
Stellar!
This book is an excellent portal into the life of an amazing performer. It's truthful, shows both the glamourous side of fame and the ugly. If you have ever followed husker du or sugar and wondered what started a revolution, this is a must read!
Rock and redemption- VERY powerful
As a fan, I was excited to see behind the scenes of Bob Mould's life. I had no idea how harrowing his childhood was and it certainly shows in his pain and passionate musicality. I would say it is really the trail of rage and redemption. Rock on, Bob.
