Seven Blades in Black
Acclaimed author Sam Sykes returns with a brilliant new epic fantasy that introduces an unforgettable outcast mage caught between two warring empires.
Her magic was stolen. She was left for dead.
Betrayed by those she trusts most and her magic ripped from her, all Sal the Cacophony has left is her name, her story, and the weapon she used to carve both. But she has a will stronger than magic, and knows exactly where to go.
The Scar, a land torn between powerful empires, where rogue mages go to disappear, disgraced soldiers go to die and Sal went with a blade, a gun, and a list of seven names.
Revenge will be its own reward.
Sykes (the Bring Down Heaven trilogy) launches his Grave of Empires trilogy with this rollicking, moving fantasy epic of revenge and magic, and the price they demand of one battle-scarred gunslinger. Sal the Cacophony has been arrested by the uncompromising revolutionary government. While awaiting her execution, Sal is given one last chance to tell the truth about her past and the lives she has claimed. But rather than providing a straightforward confession, Sal tells her captors about her journeys through the Scar, a wasteland devastated by two empires, with only her gun and her winged mount for companionship. Raised as a mage, Sal survived the agony of having her magic ripped away and now lives only to kill the 33 wizards who betrayed her. In a world where magic steals pieces of its users' souls, Sal has learned to give up everything, even love itself, to fulfill her quest, so telling a few lies to her captors about her sins seems almost easy. With skillful worldbuilding, unexpected humor, and characters real enough to touch, this is easily Sykes's best book to date.
7 Thumbs Up
Loved this book! A refreshing take on the “damaged” hero trope. And the magic system is well thought out and interesting but not overwrought. It contributed to the story and plot without *becoming* the story and plot.
Also, machines, booze, babes (all genders), blades (duh), and giant freaking war birds! What else could you want?
Amazing for new fantasy readers!
This book super fast-paced and I love the sapphic romance in it. It's also pretty funny. So if you like that kind of stuff you should totally read it. Highly addictive.
Only 33% done and it’s GREAT
I’m only 33% finished but the Author told me on Twitter to write a review. So far it’s great! Super fun fantasy novel for people who have never read a fantasy novel before!
