Scrambled narrative with just a mediocre story
For twelve long years, Maggie Cooper has been held prisoner, her world nothing more but a dark room in a cellar. Abducted as a child, all Maggie knows is the familiar scrape of the door opening, a sound she dreads and loathes. Having mothered three sons in captivity, all Maggie wants, is for her remaining child Max to see the light of day. Having two of her sons taken away from her by her abductor, Seven Days is a crime thriller filled with a suspenseful story of unbent resolve, courage and resourcefulness with quite a few twists and turns.
In all honesty, it took me an year to finish this book - having picked it up and put down many, many times. The story is compelling but narrated in bits and pieces that seems like a trail mix of characters and dates. It isn’t incoherent by any means, but the jumbled narrative often gets exasperating. While it does well showing the aftermath of Maggie’s kidnapping from the perspective of her parents and sibling, there is quite a lot that feels left out, especially the history between her family and her captor. The identity of her kidnapper is revealed halfway through the book, and fails to deliver on a jaw-dropping twist that could have otherwise salvaged a mediocre, largely uninteresting read.
