Publisher Description
Aura can see ghosts. Born after the Shift, a little-understood event that enabled younger generations to communicate with the dead, Aura is relentlessly pursued by these violet-hued spirits. They need help to pass out of this world and into the next. And some are so angry they are on the verge of becoming Shades, dark vortexes of energy. But Aura just wants the ghosts to leave her alone so she can spend time with her boyfriend, Logan.
When Aura is paired with a new foreign-exchange student to research the Shift for a class project, she is determined to ignore her partner’s sexy Scottish accent and discover the cause of the Shift so she can reverse it.
Then Logan dies a most untimely death. Forced to reconsider her relationship with the living and the dead, Aura is caught in a love triangle with her violet-hued boyfriend and her hot research partner... one of whom may hold the key to reversing the Shift.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Sixteen-year-old Aura, the first child born after the Shift, is in the vanguard of a change in human perception. Ghosts are now visible, everyday creatures, but perceptible only to those born after the Shift, creating a subtly delineated schism between generations. What the Shift was and why it occurred are still mysteries very personal ones for unwilling pioneers like Aura. The uncomfortable questions turn excruciating when her boyfriend, Logan, dies of an accidental overdose. His ghost can give Aura some comfort, but it can t touch her or interact with the world the way the living Logan could or the way a charming Scottish transfer student, Zachary, can. Though adult author Smith-Ready s occasionally racy YA debut resolves almost none of the issues surrounding the Shift, leaving the door open for future books, it is a fully satisfying read on its own, with well-developed, believable characters. Aura s grief, Logan s rage, and Zachary s wistfulness are expertly sketched. Perhaps even more impressive is the understatement of the paranormal premise Smith-Ready changes the world completely by simply changing our ability to see. Ages 14 up.

YA Supernatural Romance
This book series was recommended to me by a friend. She practiced by saying that she read it in high school. Some expectations were pretty low. However, the Sparks eat it all nations of the book I had going into it. I FLEW through this!
Shade is about our main girl, Aura, who is a part of a new generation of ghost–seeing people. She has a love triangle with two boys, Luca and Zach, who don’t have the pleasure of seeing lost ones. You’ve got a little bit of paranormal romance, impossible love, and friends-to-lovers, but LOTS of emotional turns. Smith-Ready does a good job of creating an intriguing world with ties to real–life artifacts. The story was well paced and kept me wanting to know what happens next.
Highly recommend continuing the series with the next book, Shift.
