This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier.
Synopsis:
Gau Shesharrin (retired assassin and veteran of the Terran/Osk war) runs into a debris field, which leaves his ship, the Carnivore, in need of repair. Stranded on a world crawling with Terrans and their scaly Urd allies, he faces the impossible task of finding the resources to fix the damage. Help comes from an unlikely quarter. He meets an Arashal named Arkk, who is fleeing an Urd hunting party that slaughtered his people. If they work together, Gau can repair his ship, and Arkk can seek justice for his paddock.
Review:
“Shadow Game” is a novelette by Caitlin Demaris McKenna and part of her Expansion Series. What makes the story interesting is that Caitlin Mckenna wrote it entirely from the aliens’ point of view. It was a little disorienting at first, but it flowed well once I got into the story. A chance event puts two alien beings on a course of self-discovery. The novelette whetted my appetite to read the first novel in the series, Absence of Blade.
