Rose Trewin saved the king from a coup and stopped the powerful mage, but at the cost of her secrets. Despite her worst fears, she might've found a home at the castle and perhaps a friend in the king. What she still doesn't have, however, is answers about her magic. A trip out of the safety of the king's castle sends Rose in search of those answers, and a way to stop herself from being overcome by her own magic. During her trip a powerful enemy arises from the ruins of history and begins destroying everything in his path. 

War is threatening King Micah's southern border and his council continues to push him to choose a bride, reminding him all too often of his lack of an heir. He finds himself hesitating as he remembers a young woman with defiance in her eyes and the friendship that's grown between them. 

Rose and King Micah find themselves in a dangerous position when the new threat destroying the country and the fighting in the south appear connected. They don't know where he came from, how to fight his magic, or what his plan is. All they know is they must stop him before he can destroy everything they hold dear.
