Charlotte Brontë (1816-18550 was an English novelist, one of the three Brontë sisters. At the age of twenty she went to Brussels to work at a boarding school where she taught english. Charlotte wrote under the pen name 'Currer Bell', as women weren't supposed to write books in those times. In her works she touched upon the theme of the position of women in England in those times as well as the conflict between a human being and the society in general.  Nowadays she is mostly known for her novel 'Jane Eyre', published in 1847 which eventually was made into a number of films.


'Shirley' is the second novel by Charlotte Brontë, first published in 1849. The novel is set in the beginnning of the nineteenth century, in the times of the industrial repression and the movement of Luddite. The novel reveals the social problems which were brought by this movement and gives its readers the opportunity to take a look at the situation from diffirent angles.
