Just a collection of my short stories (written originally in Spanish and translated into English).

This book of 'short-short' stories has real possibilities-- stories that take you in one direction, but then when you think you know what's going on, suddenly spring the unexpected ending.
The stories are translated from the Spanish by the author, which is where the problem lies. English is pretty clearly David Santos Solano's second language, and the stories suffer for it. I suspect his spoken English is pretty fluent-- his English vocabulary certainly reflects that-- but in writing his less-than-perfect English grammar is a real distraction from the stories, which are good enough to deserve better.
I'll still give him three stars, for the quality of his imagination (that's a star or two more than I would usually give for stories with multiple grammatical errors-- but they are better stories!). I just wish that he'd found a friendly (and educated) native English speaker to volunteer a few hours as a copy editor...
In any case, his writing ability in English is far, far better than 98% of Americans' ability to write in any second language, so I'm impressed. And if he brings out a second edition, I'll buy it-- and give it five stars.
