Silas Marner

As a high school student, I read this book 50 years ago. My mother was interested and read it then as well. It has stood the test of time. A setting distilled to the essence, and splendid characters reflecting a time and place found only in old sketches and forgotten memories of England before she became an empire are what make this expertly crafted tale a gem in the rough. George Elliott is the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, and I am still a fan.

Endearing characters, timeless affection

I first read this book as required reading high school literature class. I then thought of Silas Marner as simply a curious literary character.

Returning to this story after becoming a mother has made it dear to my heart. With folksy speech and deep insight, George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) endears characters in a timeless way.
