Silence in the Forest

Prince Heinrich comes to the mountains to escape a Viennese scandal and find quiet. At his hunting lodge he meets Lolo Petri, who keeps her late father's cottage at the forest's edge, and Mazegger, the gamekeeper whose jealousy already claims her. Guests from the city arrive with their own claims on Heinrich's attention. Between lodge, garden, and timber, a love story unfolds that Ganghofer's German readers have cherished for generations.

Silence in the Forest (Das Schweigen im Walde) is one of Ludwig Ganghofer's best-loved Highland novels—Alpine romance, hunting-country manners, and the stubborn weather of the Bavarian/Tyrolean highlands. This edition is a new English translation by Bradley Hall of the German original, prepared for modern readers.

This volume belongs to The Highland Novels of Ludwig Ganghofer, a matched set of new translations.
