Sixteen-year-old Penelope Bogg is a handmaiden to the Queen of Alsmora, but she is anything but a simple servant. Here are just a few things on her mind:

Her mother's mysterious death two years previously;
The fact that she never inherited her magic by the age of thirteen;
The strange, cloaked girl following her through town, muttering that Penelope is "the right descendant"; and
The little problem of her collapsing when her vision changes to silver.



Soon she learns the truth: her collapses are a warning. A dark shadow is looming over the kingdom of Alsmora and she and her new friends, Mag and Artie, are the key to saving everyone.
