This Book Was and Is Everything to Me
My Christmas present to myself this year was to buy and re-read this book I loved so much in my childhood, when I must’ve checked it out at least 10 times from the library. It was everything I remembered, and more.
Years after enjoying this book in the grade school library, I was lucky enough to learn to ride on a Mustang that had been trained in much the same way the Clint gently acclimates young Smoky, and that horse had a twinkle in his eye and would spook playfully well into his 30s. The horsemanship and love are even more clear to me now than they were when I was a kid.
There’s so much here beyond a horse story, and because this Apple edition includes the author’s outstanding original illustrations, this is an absolute steal at 99 cents. It’s a scenic ride that’s partly an adventure, partly a love story for the range and its horses, partly about recovering from trauma, and 100% about never giving up hope.
