Snorkel McCorkle and the Lost Flipper

What a great read! A very engaging young heroine, befriended by her seashore buddies, a manatee and a pelican, as she awaits the return of her mother, who was lost at sea. Full of wonderful details of how she builds outrigging and a mast out of found objects and trash for her trusty kayak. Also lots of good information about environmental dangers present for sea creatures, and a lesson in how to follow the ocean currents which move through the Atlantic Ocean. What’s more, there are songs! So...this modern day “fairytale” has all the right ingredients, and is such a lot of fun to read!

This book is exactly what society needs right now. Not only is it super intriguing, it’s also a realization of our current affects we have on the environment. This book does an amazing job at creating an eye opening view to young children and even older on how we impact our environment. It creates an entertaining perspective for those who read but also an understanding of current issues that need to be more widely addressed. I really hope you take the time to read this book because it is definitely worth it. :)

As I read this children’s book I could not help thinking why didn’t I have this book to read when I was a little girl. Thornburg has captured the spirit and adventure of every child and weaved it into a wonderful story about courage, adventure, activism and a child’s hope for climate change. Truly a remarkable book that any child or adult child should read. Gwendolyn O’Guin, DO Family Medicine
