Soul Growing
Spiritual Exercise in Postmodern Times
Publisher Description
This little book is a gathering of meditations on spiritual exercise for those of us who are boldly entering the postmodern era. I admit to owning the words herein. But I also acknowledge that these words have been forged in the company and with the help of many others who, more than I, are masters of the spiritual life.
An assumption behind these words is that an era beyond modernity is almost in place. I realize that eras, epochs, and ages are fabrications of historians trying to make some sense out of history. But I use the fiction to argue that we are developing a belief system and language that often includes, but also transcends that of modernity as generally understood. And, despite the claims of contemporary moralists and religionists, that change can be an opportunity for human progress. Another assumption is that in all times there is a spiritual dimension to human existence that requires exercise to develop as much or more than the corporeal dimension. Soul-growing is as important, maybe more important, today as in any other era of the development of our species.
