In Speaking Christian, acclaimed Bible scholar Marcus Borg, author of Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, argues that the very language Christians use has become dangerously distilled, distorted, and disconnected from the beliefs which once underpinned it.
Stating a case that will resonate with readers of N. T. Wright’s Simply Christian, Borg calls for a radical change to the language we use to invoke our beliefs—the only remedy that will allow the Church's words to once again ring with truth, power, and hope.
But how can modern believers rediscover the ancient power of words like ‘salvation,’ ‘sin,’ and ‘born again’ without resorting to rigid literalism?
Beyond Literalism: Discover why modern, literal interpretations have become an intellectual stumbling block and how they distort the Bible’s original message.A Historical-Metaphorical Approach: Learn to read scripture in its ancient context, unlocking the rich, metaphorical meanings that bring familiar stories and concepts back to life.Reclaiming Christian Language: Journey through the original meanings of foundational words like ‘salvation,’ ‘righteousness,’ and ‘born again,’ transforming them from obstacles into sources of power.Faith for the 21st Century: Find an intellectually honest and spiritually vibrant path forward, one that allows Christian language to once again be a vehicle for grace and hope.

At Last!
I'm happy I found this book, it was recommended to me by my priest. I wish everyone would read it. Marcus Borg very nicely and intelligently covers all concepts of being Christian and he reveals how we have turned Christianity into what we WANT it to be rather than what it actually is and originally was. Literalists, those taking the Bible strictly, literally, and factual, may not like it, although plenty of others will. Borg has a vast wealth of knowledge to share with most Christians and the book is a crucial addition to all religious libraries. I wish it had been available to me many years ago because now I see some things I have learned incorrectly because it was taken out of context and/or told to me incorrectly. Borg is here to clarify; he is not a fake teacher as someone else said, rather he would like nothing better than for us all to understand Christianity as it was given to us in scriptural stories written by ancient Israel and early Christian communities. Because of this author and this book, I better understand Jesus and His teachings and I can love others as He loved me.
