She should fear him. He should hate her.

From early childhood, the Modoc woman Luash viewed white newcomers as her people's enemy. The army in particular is committed to destroying those she loves. As the voice of Eagle Spirit, she longs to return to when her ancestors roamed the Land Of Burned Out Fires in peace. Sadly, that precious time is no more, but she'll do everything she can to try to make the newcomers understand how precious the wilderness is to those who have always lived here.

Army advisor Jed Britton isn't interested in a word the brave young woman speaks. Why should he when, only a few years ago, a savage nearly killed him? However, despite his scars and hatred, he can't deny Luash's impact on his senses—or her mysterious relationship with an eagle.
