Spiritual Warfare

This issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster is on "Spiritual Warfare." Thomas Brooks introduces this vital subject by urging us that Christ, the Scriptures, our own hearts, and Satan's devices are the four prime subjects that should be first and most diligently studied. J. C. Ryle declares that the believer's spiritual warfare is of far greater importance than any war that man has ever waged. What is spiritual warfare? James Ussher defines it and then introduces us to the war and to our armor. When and how did the warfare begin? David Martyn Lloyd-Jones gives us the biblical origin of this hostile conflict. William Gurnall's The Christian in Complete Armor—600 pages on this subject—exhorts the believer to find all his strength in God's almighty power. A second article by Brooks defines the wiles of the devil and gives Christ's people sound biblical remedies. Lloyd-Jones, also in a second article, exposes and defines the nature of our spiritual enemies. Christ commands, through the letter to the Ephesians, that Christians put on the whole armor of God; John Calvin examines each piece for our benefit and victory in the battle. Thomas Manton then exalts the crucified and resurrected Christ and encourages all Christ's soldiers by explaining how Jesus crushed Satan's head! And Charles Spurgeon closes this issue calling all believers to strike a blow for Jesus and holiness.
