In order to avoid the undesirable consequences of a sedentary lifestyle, there are ever more men and women who practice some type of physical activity, from simple walking to the most varied sporting activities.


This healthy and growing tendency has undeniable benefits on the body and mind of the general population of all ages.


However, certain precautions need to be taken as no-one is free of the risk of suffering injury when practicing a sport. This risk is most evident among those who perform certain intense forms of sports, amateurs or professionals, as the demands are much greater in these cases. Sporting injuries have thus become a sufficiently important entity for medical science to have increased its interest in the prevention and treatment of the various and common conditions, usually affecting the musculoskeletal system. They are caused by certain reiterative actions in the majority of the innumerable, so-called Olympic sports.


The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since that time, the increase in physical demands and the desire to beat records have increased the risks so that now they are almost commonplace.


Hence the aim of this publication: to explain the medical aspects of the different sports currently practiced by athletes and players, and the possible injuries that can occur depending on the specific characteristics of each sport.
