SS 2044 describes a world not of physical deprivation but of spiritual. This dystopia takes place a generation in the future, where work is no longer a necessity except for elite members of the Agency who strive to provide total satisfaction by exerting total control. However, this iron hand of rule wears a velvet glove. The masses don’t rebel out of fear but out of indulgence. Their every fancy is fulfilled. They are saturated with booze and pot; they can vent their libido whenever they wish and spend their lives stoned until they reach the mandatory termination age. No one speaks of death, for such talk would cloud the ever- sunny world of Total Satisfaction. However, into this world steps a recent college graduate who has managed to live a life shielded somewhat from the superficial indulgence of his peers. He comes to work for the Agency and join the elite. But his affair with Total Satisfaction is brief as he, his fiancée, and an older co-worker struggle to maintain their values in an otherwise valueless world.
