The story of Saint Francis of Assisi is particularly famous among Catholics. The story of his simple, peaceful life has transcended religious borders to become an inspiration to many.  Francis was born in the early 1180s into a wealthy merchant family in the Italian town of Assisi. Growing up, he lived a privileged life of wealth and comfort. But as a young adult in 1201, he fought as a knight for Assisi in a war against its neighbouring town of Perugia. He was captured and imprisoned for a year. During this time, Francis turned to spirituality.
