Coming of age, science fantasy
Some of the detours seem a little random, but they all come together in a story that might be a bit YA in feel now, but is classic SF. You're thrown into a world and while there are rules and certainly an occasional explanation-aside for the reader, you're frequently expected to put the pieces together from what the characters do.
For all the classic age of it, it's amazingly modern in spots as well, even visionary.
But forget the English-major analysis: it's a good yarn about a species of human that teleports around the universe, looking for the fabled planet of Doubleluck, the El Dorado of the Galaxy, and the sass-and-vinegar teen who finds it. And finds out there are people who want it never found, and enemies who want to rule it. ...oops.
