An all-new novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!
Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.
She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.
As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so, she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.

A good Discovery introduction!
I enjoyed this riveting and intriguing story introducing Michael Burnham and Spock before the events of season one of Star Trek Discovery. Captains Georgiou and Pike see action together to thwart a crisis, and save a planet. A good read!
A story that could best be told in this medium.
Dragged a bit in the middle, but for the most part, a great book which I highly recommend to Star Trek fans. To say more would be spoiling your present, so I won’t do that. Read and enjoy.
Well, not one of the best Star Trek books I've ever read
But not a complete waste of time either. In this awkward period of time as I wait between season one, episode two and season one, episode three of Star Trek Discovery I wanted to know more about that ship and her crew. So instead I read about the Shi– oh I can't spell it, I can barely say it–zo.
I rarely pre-order books. I pre-ordered this book. And I finished it in a few days. If you're the type of Star Trek nerd who reads Star Trek books and can live with the idea that somewhere somebody decided to give Spock a step sister, then bang on with a gong, this is your book.
