Adjust expectations
The central premise is playing with the trope of ancient civilizations leaving behind technology to be found by the wrong people, all as a test for humanity. Fair enough, it is well enough used that the book mocks it and Picard nearly breaks the fourth wall in the process. Quite early in the show’s run to hate them this much, but ok (2nd season).
In fact, it’s only a sitcom laugh-track away from making sense tonally. I am a big fan of these paperbacks, and most authors bring an authentic touch to their characterizations of the next generation crew. I can not get immersed into this one.
Fair warning, the author creates “Space Elves with Vampire Powers” - Selelvians. There’s also several instances of “I HAVE READ ASIMOV” and ill-fitting references such as a Klingon first officer named Tron, of the Klingon cruiser Kolthulu.
Wesley’s best friend in the world, the Space Elf™️ finds himself with a Space AIDS-analogue and this is suddenly the B-plot that won’t end in order to allow the A-plot to proceed. Turns out the best friend is hypnotizing Wesley to find his cure, thrall-style. Long before Twilight.
If this is your first Star Trek: The Next Generation paperback, please do not judge others based on the quality of this one.
