An old favorite
This book’s been around a while, but it holds up beautifully, even in light of all of the developments within the Trek universe since it was written. I like to return to it every few years, not only for nostalgia and such, but also because of the way she makes it truly Trek - beyond sci-fi and into the humanities, philosophy, ethics, etc. A pleasure to read and re-read.
Tedious read
If you are looking for a ponderously slow moving book with vast amounts of pointless description, this is the book. By chapter 13 I was so fed up with it I simply flipped ahead until the last page.
The tragedy is that there is a fine, interesting story trying to escape these pages, but the story is wafer-thin. The core of the story was reworked by the author for ST:TNG’s season 1 episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, a story I found kind of lackluster as well.
If you enjoy Diane Duane’s writing, you will love this book. Personally, I goes into the “never bother with again” pile.
An all time classic!
Jumping out of our galaxy with a brilliant glass spider at your side? How can you beat that? One of my favorite ST novels of all time! A must read!
