Trials of the Jedi
I absolutely love the High Republic era and this book was really satisfying. The ending was really good. I want more…. Especially after the cancellation of Acolyte season 2. Such a pity. MTFBW
Could Have Been Better
Sadly, after having read all of the High Republic Books and the accompanying works, I have to say that this book was one of my least favorites.
90% of the characters that are focused on in this story play no part in the outcome of events in the finale, yet are each given at least an entire chapter unto themselves that led to me skim-reading heavily.
The main villain in the story is given so much plot armor and made to seem as if they’re so much better than anyone else that it fundamentally undermines the strengths and weaknesses of the Force and the uniqueness of Force wielders that are supposed to set them apart from everyone else.
And the Jedi are made to look almost entirely incompetent throughout the story, constantly having to react to events instead of being proactive, that it leaves them incapable to prevent anything the villains do from happening, save for a few very specific scenes at the end where they all miraculously find a way to save the day at the very last second.
As I read through this series, and saw how the characters developed in their own unique ways, there was one thing that I was rooting for to happen at the end of this story that sadly never came to pass, and is ultimately the reason for why I scored it as low as I did (along with the other issues above).
There is no true happy ending to this story.
A grand end to a new era
What an amazing conclusion to a brand new era of Star Wars! Thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what happens with these characters I’ve come to care about.
