Steam, Its Generation and Use

This book details advances in the production of steam and the utilization of all types of fuels. This edition has been thoroughly updated and revised including completely rewritten sections on environmental protection, emissions control, and advanced steam generator designs for the 21st century. 

Steam is the longest continuously published engineering text of its kind in the world. The first edition of this book appeared in 1875, not long after an engineer named Stephen Wilcox, Jr., applied his knowledge of water circulation theory to perfecting a new and safe boiler concept. A sample of the instruction is “Petroleum is practically the only liquid fuel sufficiently abundant and cheap to be used for the generation of steam. It possesses many advantages over coal and is extensively used in many localities.

There are three kinds of petroleum in use, namely those yielding on distillation: 1st, paraffin; 2nd, asphalt; 3rd, olefine. To the first group belong the oils of the Appalachian Range and the Middle West of the United States. These are a dark brown in color with a greenish tinge. Upon their distillation such a variety of valuable light oils are obtained that their use as fuel is prohibitive because of price.”
