The flare of a cigarette and the handsome Irishman in the shadows--I wanted it all, but I wasn’t allowed to want.
Ronan was danger and beauty, murder and mercy. To me, he was a mystery, but he was also the only man who ever knew me.
In that single stolen moment before I had to give my life to someone else, I imagined myself with him, the man with scars and bruises. The one who knew what hurting meant far more than I did at that time.
Instead I was given to another man, one who broke my soul right along with my bones.
Through it all, there was always that memory of the man in the shadows, the one who said--not in words--that I was strong, that I could endure, that I was more than just a princess in a ballgown.
Now Ronan is the only man who could keep me safe from two warring families that wanted my blood. The spark that started two years ago burned brighter with each touch, each glance, each kiss. He woke me from the nightmare, giving me life with soft touches and sharp words.
Two years ago, Ronan gave me strength, but he took something in return. I never gave him my heart, but hearts like mine are made to be stolen.
Highly enjoyable intro to Poppy & Ronan
This was my first book by M. O'Keefe so I didn't know quite what to expect but I was definitely not disappointed. The book is set in the Midnight Dynasty world but can be read without reading any of the other books set there (those books are written by other authors and focus on other characters). The hero is Ronan, Caroline Constantine's right-hand man who I saw in one of the other books and wondered about at the time. I love a mysterious hero and he definitely is that, not speaking much and only seen through the eye's of beleaguered heroine Poppy. Both Poppy and Ronan have a painful past, though we explore hers throughout most of the book, the details of which are slowly revealed as she struggles to break free and discover herself again following her latest major difficulty (purposefully vague here). She and Ronan have brief, intense encounters that contribute to a medium-burn that I loved. I was frustrated with some of what had been done to Poppy but did enjoy seeing her start to fight back. It ends in a cliffhanger and I am excited to see what happens next, and just as eager for Poppy to fully come into her own as an individual as I am to see her and Ronan's relationship grow (though I confess I like the beginning, fighting it stage the most in any romance).
This is the first book in the trilogy and I was absolutely hooked to this story. Ms Okeefe has been on my list of authors to read but I hadn’t got the chance until now to read her books. It might be my first book but definitely won’t be the last I read by this author . I devoured this book and really enjoyed it. The story kept me on edge and flipping through the pages. Once I finished it I wanted to jump to the next book right away and luckily I had the next book in the series on my kindle . Without giving any spoilers this book definitely was captivating and kept me on the edge. A must read .
A Great Introduction to the Trilogy!
This is a great introduction to this trilogy. We get a fantastic buildup of the characters, great plot development, clashing emotions and of course we’re left desperate for more.
Poppy is an innocent, sheltered young woman discovering herself and the world for the first time, while trying to navigate the secrets and lies that she’s finding suddenly surround her. My heart broke continuously for Poppy throughout the book in ways I was not expecting. I am looking forward to seeing how she develops and finds her way.
Ronan is a mysterious and complex character especially in contrast to the very inexperienced Poppy. We only get tiny glimpses into who he is in this book as he almost gives the impression of a foreboding ghost. He is a character that will be very interesting and intriguing to watch as we move into Broken Hearts.
This is without a doubt a VERY slow burn read, the encounters we get between Ronan and Poppy are intense and they’ll definitely leave you yearning for more.
The overall feeling of this book gave me such conflicted feelings of who or what should or shouldn’t be trusted while leaving me with a sense of incredible things to come.
Stolen Hearts is an amazing start to this twisted, dark romance trilogy, and with that insane cliffhanger, I cannot wait for the next book.
