Stone on Stone

Drystone walls, built of stone and air, are an integral part of the British landscape. These expertly crafted structures are widely admired, and yet often overlooked. But who made them, how have they endured over thousands of years, and why are they so deeply tied to our cultural heritage?

Inspired by a well-loved wall from her Scottish childhood, writer Laura Parker goes in search of answers as she travels across the British Isles along these ancient borders. Tracing their unique craftmanship, from Cornish hedges to Scottish dykes, she uncovers the history of our agricultural past - and what these walls mean to us today.
