Stories They Told Me

Some years ago, I found one of my old notebooks from the early 1980’s. At that time I was a volunteer at the Queen of Peace in the South Bronx, in New York City, where I spent many nights in the shelter for homeless men. As I was reading these sketchy notes about some of those I met there, the stories came back to life, inspiring me to share some of these remarkable destinies and the power they hold. The central stories, while all true, are expanded on the warp of my imagination. My hope is that you will find these recollections as moving and thought provoking as I do.

About the Author

People who know me have often commented that my life seems to have been stringed together in a series of strange and somewhat disconnected experiences. The real reason for moving around on this planet for the last 60 years is that I have compensated my difficulty learning from traditional learning models with learning from experience in real situations with real people. I find it easier to act to learn than to learn to act. My curiosity is endless, life continues to be intensely engaging.

In these travels I have come to love this blue jewel of a planet, with its endless display of life. This is the source from which I fill my pages with what I see and what I want to say.
