Publisher Description
Richard Bach’s first book, Stranger to the Ground is above all else an insight into the character of a man whose great compulsion is to measure himself against storm and night and fear. On the surface it is the tale of a memorable mission of a young fighter pilot utilizing his skills in a lonely duel with death. Yet between the lines emerges the portrait of the airman as a breed, probing outward, but even more significantly, inward.

Stranger To The Ground
I first read this book while a high school junior. I was always interested in military aircraft, this book was like pouring gas on a fire. Four years of college I joined the USAF and flew F4 Phantoms for twenty years, visiting some of the very same bases and dropping bombs on some of the same bombing ranges the author describes. I've always kept a copy of this book in my travels and I've read and re-read it hundreds of times. I'm now retired and when I look to revisit the old times, I read this book cover to cover.......again. I smell the smells, hear the cockpit noises and see the things the author writes about. This is as close as you can get to experiencing the real thing.
