Late fifties, North-East England, and chaos in the Connelly Family as womanising husband, George, throws in the towel, abandons wife and children and disappears into darkest Yorkshire with his newest love. Vera Connelly, feisty and temperamental, reluctantly vacates her colliery home, moves herself and her two boys to nearby Easington Village and finds shelter with her widowed mother and tries to rebuild her shattered life.

Along the way she becomes involved with the monied Stoker family who own one of the palatial properties in the western part of the village. Evelyn and Elmore Stoker, brothers, one industrious, the other a bounder and a parasite: one an Adonis, the other a stammering weakling. On the rebound, and manipulated by her devious mother, Vera Connelly falls head over heels for one of the Stoker boys … the tall, gorgeous charmer, Elmore, and starts to learn all about the nefarious Stoker secrets.

Vera’s boys - Joe, 11 years old, headstrong, bursting with mettle and grit, and Jack, 5 years old, shy, nervous, relying on his brother for survival - bravely cope with the turmoil and stress of moving home, persevere and battle in a different environment: a new school, new friends and without a father’s love to support them.
