This book aims to provide information about Germany and the European Union for US American high school students. The selected topics provide solid background information for comparisons and discussions about economics, politics and other issues that are important for Europe as well as the US. They include the history of transatlantic relations, Germany’s history in Europe, the development of the European Union and Germany’s role therein and a portrayal of Germany’s social market economy 


This book provides information about Germany and the EU. It was created for teachers and students of high schools in the US. Teachers of economics, social studies, history and foreign language will find background information about important social, political and economic developments in Germany and Europe. These materials will encourage reflection and stimulate discussions about issues that are important for the US as well as the EU.. Chapters include the history of transatlantic relations, the development of the European Union and the euro, Germany’s history and its role in the European Union today, the German model of a social market economy and the important topic of sustainability.  Teachers can use the entire book or individual chapters to enhance their instruction. Teachers’ notes and German translations are included with each chapter.
