Publisher Description

When gods have grudges, even the most privileged mortals pay the price.

Eya is a sheltered and spoiled princess who longs for adventure and purpose beyond a future as a wife. When the discovery of an ancient relic in her kingdom leads to a devastating war, she loses everyone she loves and the life she never asked for falls apart.

Desperate and alone, Eya flees on a ship only for it to wreck on enemy shores, forcing her to pose as a maid for survival. As she struggles to keep her identity secret and learn to live as a peasant, she discovers newfound powers that spark danger around her.

It is only through exploring her new world's terrifying realities and confronting the disquieting darkness within that Eya can conquer her powers. However, this alone may not be enough to rise up against those who wish her dead. She'll need powerful allies, and that means finding out the truth about the relic that changed her fate.

In this epic fantasy, Eya embarks on a coming-of-age journey where she meets with a diverse cast of women who teach her the value of strength and support. This feminist tale has been compared to Leigh Bardugo's work and is perfect for fans of dark fantasy and LGBTQ+ representation.

Read Struggling with the Current, the first book in the Telverin Trilogy, and join Princess Eya on her quest for freedom, power, and revenge

Earning everything, when all is taken from you.

This passage really summed up, for me, the entire story as well as our main character Eya:

“I'm glad you didn't marry her. It's awful what she's going through, but all Eya ever wanted was to become her own person. She would never have achieved that as somebody's kept wife. At least losing everything meant she also lost the shackles she'd been born wearing.”

I have never seen someone who was born with everything, have it stripped from them, and then drug from the seas, through the mud, and into the fire. Eya is someone whose perseverance is rewarded as through all of her trials she learns and sharpens her resolve and comes out better for it. Every win is earned, every saving grace rewarding, and any tribulation devastating.

There are moments in the story where, knowing she wouldn’t be completely happy, it would have been a peaceful life. But it’s not what she wants and it’s not what destiny has in store for her.

Full of might, magic, gods, conmen, lovers, and greedy evil doers this was a delightful tale of a slow burn of revenge that started out as seeking shelter from overwhelming forces to perhaps choosing to not allow those who seek to take from you and push back. Refreshing are its characters who all are forced to grow up in not just age but from a life of naivety and pampering to face real life head on. It was such a journey to meet them so young and eventually young adulthood having faced so much and then maturing into a time of crisis.

This is also set against a background of Gods and Prophecies who have set in motion a game of revenge and freedom for their own brethren. I am excited to see if destiny so set in stone, or is malleable as even the toughest if tools can be if pushed hard enough.

Personally, might and magic is not my usual forte, but a true character driven narrative, such as this, carried me through as I just needed to know if everyone will be ok and if love really can overcome prophecy.

Epic storytelling, wonderful characters

Expansive world building, complex believable characters, a detailed plot, this book has it all. Filled with hate and love, fear and hope, poverty and riches, you’ll read until late at night and sneak in some time to read throughout your day.
Although this is a complete story, it is the first part of a trilogy, and I can hardly wait to read the second part!
