Still grieving her husband's death, Bianca meets the charismatic Ramón in the small coastal town of George, South Africa. A teacher with a passion for language, he offers her the chance to start a new life in Málaga, and she accepts.

But at Instituto Guerrera, the private language school where Ramón works, Bianca starts noticing small things that don't quite add up. Staff and students sometimes behave in ways she can't quite make sense of, and she begins to wonder what Ramón is really up to.

When her past suddenly catches up with her, the new life she has built begins to fall apart.

Subjective Mood is the first book in the False Friends series. Each novel returns to Instituto Guerrera and follows a different teacher at the school. The titles borrow from Spanish grammar, but the language lessons are only a small part of the story.
