Publisher Description

20th Anniversary Edition—with a New Foreword by Kimberly Elise

A novel by a critically acclaimed voice in contemporary fiction, praised by Ebony for its “unforgettable images, unique characters, and moving story that keeps the pages turning until the end.”

A young prostitute comes to Bigelow, Arkansas, to start over, far from her haunting past. Sugar moves next door to Pearl, who is still grieving for the daughter who was murdered fifteen years before. Over sweet-potato pie, an unlikely friendship begins, transforming both women's lives—and the life of an entire town.

Sugar brings a Southern African-American town vividly to life, with its flowering magnolia trees, lingering scents of jasmine and honeysuckle, and white picket fences that keep strangers out—but ignorance and superstition in. To read this novel is to take a journey through loss and suffering to a place of forgiveness, understanding, and grace.

TMEsho ,

Bernice McFadden is an extraordinary storyteller

Her books are very poignant page-turners. After reading Sugar, I was an instant fan! I have since read every book she’s written. I’m surprised they haven’t made Sugar a motion picture yet!

Great book from the beginning until the end.

I absolutely loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. A real page turner. The author did a great job making me feel connected to the characters!

Miss Grandmother ,

A treasure of a book!

I have a date with a good Berniece McFadden book every couple of years; this is my third re-visit. The first read was so mysterious and edgy-a real page turner that kept me up nights. The second visit was slower paced as I got to know each character intimately and determine what made each one tick. This, my third revisit, felt like a reunion of sorts. I have read all of this authors books and I plan to revisit all of them, but Sugar is my all-time favorite!
