Seminal work in sociology

Durkheim's suicide is a masterwork. Not only is his analysis of the causes and types of suicide still mostly timeless (save for his occasional dated sexism), but he solidly argue for the distinctiveness of society as a thing beyond the mere aggregation of individuals. Every person interested in social or individual life should read this book. It's long, but hint: you can skim through the tables and numbers because he always summarizes the important bits afterwards.
