#1
On May 8, 1902, a volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique began to violently erupt, killing nearly 30,000 people in just a few hours. It was this event that convinced 31-year-old Harvard University geologist Thomas Jaggar to dedicate his life to studying volcanoes.
#2
Jaggar was a geologist who, in 1906, became the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Geology Department. In 1908, he was on an expedition to see Kilauea, the volcano on the island of Hawai’i. He was fascinated by the sight of a lake of lava.
