Publisher Description

Sonia Summer’s debut poetry collection, Sunflower Seeds, takes readers on an intimate journey through the intersections of personal and collective experiences of social injustice, survival, and Black womanhood. Each poem offers an unflinching reflection on strength, vulnerability, and self-awareness, inviting readers to see their own resilience in the face of trauma. With raw honesty, Summer transforms personal truths into universal connections, creating a space for healing, reflection, and growth.

Divided into four evocative sections, Sunflower Seeds begins with IN FIELD / FROM YAAD, an exploration of racism, white nationalism, and Black culture through the lens of a first-generation American. Poems like “Life Interrupted” and “For the Woman Lined in Progress” confront police brutality and Caribbean colonialism, celebrating Black resilience and triumph.

AT BODEGA, inspired by Summer’s upbringing at the border of Queens and Long Island, captures the growing pains of young adulthood. Poems such as “The Local Girls” and “Photosynthesis” honor the complexities of coming into womanhood, while “Pompeii” explores the raw realities of healing after sexual assault.

In OUT OF SEASON, Summer delves into relationships, heartache, and sensuality, asking readers to reflect on the seeds they’ve planted. This section blends vulnerability with empowerment through bold, provocative imagery.

The final section, FOR HARVEST BY SUMMER, celebrates resilience and self-actualization, urging readers to embrace growth and find lessons in their pain. Pieces like “Whole Foods” and “Faluma (Rest in Power Sisa Agi)” shine with themes of survival, cultural pride, and self-discovery.

With unfiltered honesty and lyrical grace, Sunflower Seeds invites readers to heal, reflect, and rediscover the beauty within their struggles. Let its words inspire your own journey toward transformation.

Incredible

This collection is incredible. Nothing I write can do it justice. I was only around 30 pages in when I had to stop and message the author to say that I feel this is an award winning book of poetry — and now, having finished the collection, I stand by that even more so. The poems all have one thing at their core despite covering a range of topics: being unapologetically oneself. Sonia’s word play and imagery is impressive; I highly recommend reading this book and opening yourself to a better understanding of the world and to the own healing inside yourself.
